Odyssey vs Sienna: Performance & Efficiency

Honda Odyssey vs Toyota SiennaThe Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna are actually equipped with the same 3.5L V6 engine. However, while the two minivans have a lot in common, the 2020 Sienna doesn’t quite measure up. You get up to an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 19 city/28 highway MPG1 whereas the Sienna only loses a mile per gallon at 19 city/27 highway MPG.

This is in part because of the 10-speed Automatic Transmission (10AT) with Shift-By-Wire (SBW) and Paddle Shifters that come standard on every Odyssey. Now you can drive in a semi-manual mode to have added control over your driving experience—or if you’ve been yearning to get the feeling of your old sports car back.

Unfortunately, the 2020 Sienna only has an 8-speed transmission that does not have standard or available paddle shifters.

Honda Odyssey vs Toyota Sienna

When it comes to space, the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna have you covered. They each have standard occupancy of seven passengers and can accommodate up to eight people when properly equipped. For drivers who could use those extra few inches of space, the 2020 Odyssey offers its passengers more room.

People seated in the front row of the Sienna will have 40.5 inches of legroom while the Odyssey has a slightly larger legroom at 40.9 inches. In the second and third rows, the Sienna’s legroom drops steadily to 37.6 inches and 36.3 inches respectively. Luckily, the Odyssey retains 40.9 inches of legroom in the second row and 38.1 inches of legroom in the rearmost row.

One nice-to-have that you’ll only find on the Odyssey is an available hands-free power tailgate. You can say goodbye to the anxiety of overloading your arms with too many grocery bags by simply kicking your foot under the back of the car.

Safety Features

With regard to safety, the 2020 Odyssey and Sienna offer an expansive suite of standard and driver-assistive features. These include Lane Departure Alert, a rearview camera, and a system to help prevent or mitigate the results of a frontal collision.

Although they’re quite similar, Odyssey has a slight advantage thanks to its Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™). This specially designed body structure will redistribute impact energy away from the passenger cabin and the front of the vehicle in the event of an accident.
